Day and Night is a double album divided into two sections. The first, Day, is organic and raw, with live instrumentation and 1970s-inspired psychedelic pop sound, while Night, the second, is "exploratory and intense", primarily composed of sleek, synth-driven dance pop.

On the reasoning for this decision, Carly explained, "I have always wanted to play with two distinct on an album, and this was finally the chance to do that. This whole body of work was written over such a significant chapter of my life, and it is a delight for it to be documented.
